- Only common pathology tests can be requested. No obscure tests will be permitted – unless good reason given.
- Some tests are not permitted as counselling may be required before the tests can be performed. Eg: Hepatitis B, C or HIV.
- Other tests are considered emergency tests and therefore not offered eg. troponin tests.
- Only a maximum of 3 tests can be ordered at any time – to avoid irresponsible ordering of pathology tests.
NOTE: Medicare has placed a quota for the number of blood tests that can be done in one year (e.g. 4 tests for cholesterol studies per year) and certain conditions for other tests (e.g. you need to have diabetes to have a free HbA1c test). If requirements are not met for Medicare, patients may have to pay private fees for the pathology tests.
Standard orders will be completed within 24 hours. (Monday to Friday).
Express orders can only be completed between 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday AEST.
